Amateurs ready for big test by Bucks
Tuesday 28th July 2009, 1:10PM BST.
West Midlands League division one champions Wellington Amateurs face their big night in the spotlight tonight.
The Amateurs welcome AFC Telford United to their School Grove home in Oakengates for their showcase pre-season friendly (kick-off 7.30pm).
It is the third time the two teams have met in a friendly encounter, with Telford running out 8-0 and 5-1 winners in the last two years.
“We got closer last time so the aim tonight is to try and score twice and cut down the number of goals against,” said manager Mike Armstrong.
“It’s a great night for the club to look forward to and the players love to pit themselves against Telford.
“If I remember rightly, we had more than 500 people in last time so hopefully we can get a similar number tonight and we can show what we have to offer.”
Wellington are gearing up for an important campaign as they prepare to begin their quest to win the division one title for the second successive year.
They were denied promotion last season because the floodlights weren’t erected prior to the deadline set by West Midlands League officials.
But they have strengthened the squad over the summer with former Aston Villa and Crewe youngster Lloyd McGowan amongst their summer signings.
It is the Bucks penultimate run-out before the Blue Square North opener against Blyth Spartans on Saturday week.
Defender Stuart Whitehead looks certain to miss the game with a knee ligament tweak, but striker Danny Carey-Bertram may come back into contention after sitting out Saturday’s 3-0 success over Prescot Cables with a virus.
