Nightclub bosses in more talks

Monday 27th July 2009, 3:00PM BST.

diva-top7Bosses at a Shropshire nightclub at the centre of a murder investigation are to hold further talks with police after the nightclub opened at the weekend for the first time since the death.

The management team from Liquid and Diva will meet police officers tomorrow to discuss how the reopening went and what should happen next.

Talks have been ongoing between police and the club’s owners and it was agreed the premises would initially reopen just on Friday and Saturday evening of last week.

Police licensing officer for Shropshire, Tony Mantle, said: “We will be looking at how the reopening of Diva went on Friday and Saturday evenings and discussing the way forward.”

It was the first time the club had opened since the death of 41-year-old Darren Griffiths, of Harmer Hill, following a disturbance at the premises during the early hours of June 29.

Only the Diva part of the club was in use with Liquid remaining closed for the time being.

Mr Mantle said that tomorrow’s meeting would consider various issues including the possibility of further openings.

A review of Liquid and Diva’s licence will take place at the Shirehall, in Shrewsbury, on August 20 before a licensing sub-committee of Shropshire Council.

A spokeswoman for Liquid and Diva said the reopening had gone well. She said: “The staff and management of the venue have been working in close co-operation with the police and we were satisfied with the evening session.”

Two doormen from the club have appeared at court charged with the murder of Mr Griffiths.

The case against Neil Stokes, 22, of Spring Gardens, Shrewsbury, and Daryl Brown, 32, of Severn Drive, Wellington, was adjourned until September 21 for a plea and case management hearing.

Mr Griffiths’s family have paid tribute to the father of two, a keen rugby player. They said he would be remembered for his generosity.

Amanda Griffiths, his wife and the mother of their daughters, Charlotte, six, and Ellen, four, has said her lasting memory would be of Mr Griffiths smiling after taking part in the Dragon Boat Festival in the town just hours before his death.
