Turner hopes injurys are behind him

Defender Jimmy Turner is hoping a summer of hard graft has put him right back in contention to feature in the AFC Telford United starting line-up.

The former Tamworth man endured a frustrating 2008-09 campaign following a clear-up operation on his knee that went wrong and left him sidelined for months.

By the time he was finally able to resume playing, he found himself way down the pecking order at the New Bucks Head.

Now fully fit at last, he has looked sharp in pre-season and is hoping to give manager Rob Smith food for thought.

“I’m enjoying getting some games under my belt again,” said Turner. “I’ve worked hard this summer and managed to get through a good pre-season and I feel like it’s done me some good.

“I tried to fight my way back in last year, but when you’ve got people like Stu Whitehead and Gavin Cowan in front of you, you can’t complain too much.

“I’ve come back this pre-season and worked hard, and given myself the best chance I can to get back in the starting XI.”

Turner believes that botched operation – he picked up a blood infection that saw his knee balloon in size – meant he was always one step behind his team-mates.

“As soon as you miss pre-season, you are playing catch-up,” he added.

“It was a freak injury, so that was even more frustrating.”
