Raiders fled with jewels

Friday 24th July 2009, 10:45AM BST.

Masked raiders who targeted a Shropshire firm fled with jewellery after they were disturbed, it was revealed today.

The raid on Curteis Chains Ltd in Dudleston, near Ellesmere, “wasn’t quite as bad as it would have been” as the robbers fled after realising they had been spotted, owner and director Henry Curteis said today.

Speaking from the Phillipines, Mr Curt- eis said the raiders took jewellery after tying up four members of staff and badly beating two of them, on Wednesday morning. The  business is now back up and running.

Mr Curteis said: “They didn’t get as much as they hoped because someone came in, saw the blood on the floor, immediately turned around, ran off. They realised someone had seen them, they didn’t complete their robbery and they left after that.

“It wasn’t quite as bad as it would have been if they hadn’t been disturbed. They tried to run after him but he ran so fast that he got away.”

Two men were taken to hospital following the attack and were released later the same day. Mr Curteis said one of the injured men was traumatised. “They beat the hell out of him thinking that he was refusing to give them the keys but he didn’t have the keys,” he said.

Witnesses are asked to call police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
