Part of murder probe club to reopen
Friday 24th July 2009, 1:44PM BST.
Part of a Shrewsbury nightclub at the centre of a murder inquiry is due to reopen tonight under monitoring by management and police. Liquid and Diva has been shut since June 29.
The nightclub in Raven Meadows was closed after the death of 41-year-old father-of-two Darren Griffiths, of Harmer Hill, following a disturbance there.
The Diva section will open tonight and tomorrow night, although the Liquid part will remain closed.
The decision to allow the club to partially reopen followed talks this month between managers at Luminar Leisure, which runs the venue, and the police.
A spokeswoman for Liquid and Diva today said: “We can confirm that the Diva section only will reopen, following consultation with West Mercia Police.
“The reopening will be monitored by both management at the venue and by the police as part of ongoing consultations.”
Shropshire police licensing officer Tony Mantle said officers had contingency plans in place if necessary.
A review of the licence for Liquid and Diva will take place at a meeting of the licensing sub-committee of Shropshire Council on August 20.
Doormen Neil Stokes, 22, of Spring Gardens, Shrewsbury, and Daryl Brown, 32, of Severn Drive, Wellington, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court this month charged with the murder of Mr Griffiths.
The case was adjourned until September 21.
