Borough honour for our soldiers

Friday 24th July 2009, 10:03AM BST.

telford-wrekin-council1A grand celebration will be held in Telford to pay tribute to soldiers from the region who have been made honorary freemen of the borough.

A new war memorial honouring all local soldiers who have served in wars will also be unveiled in Telford Town Park as part of the celebrations.

It comes as Telford & Wrekin Councillors voted unanimously to make members of The Rifles honorary freemen of the borough at a meeting last night. The title gives them the right to march through Telford & Wrekin whenever they wish.

Councillor Andrew Eade, leader of the council, said the event would honour the brave men and women.

He said: “This move will be in recognition of the service of generations of local men and women in all branches of the forces and in honour of the borough’s historic links with the former King’s Own Shropshire Light Infantry – of which The Rifles is the successor regiment.”
