Hospital proposal submitted to council

Health chiefs have started the ball rolling on plans to shift children’s outpatients services at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital and free up space for about 30 more beds.
The hospital has submitted plans to Telford & Wrekin Council, the local planning authority, to put up a portable building at the PRH to house children’s outpatients services.
Andy Rogers, The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust spokesman, said: “The trust is currently looking at opportunities to provide space for extra beds within the PRH.
“While one option might be to add a new modular ward, the cost of this at about £5 million is prohibitive and clearly this type of investment would end up having an adverse impact on other services.
“Therefore we are looking carefully at other options to provide additional beds at PRH, including providing a modular building for outpatient services so these areas could be converted to accommodate about 30 additional medical beds,” Mr Rogers added.
“In the long term, as Tom Taylor, trust chief executive, stated in his recent letter to council leader Andrew Eade, we believe the extra capacity will be more appropriately provided in community settings such as intermediate care and step down beds rather than our hospitals.
“However, it is vital the local NHS has these beds in place as quickly as possible given the continuing high demand for emergency in-patient treatment.”
