Village expansion backed

Controversial plans to almost double the size of a north Shropshire village by building 36 homes plus roads, parking areas and a village green, have been given the thumbs up by councillors.
It means the development, earmarked for a contaminated 1.35 hectare site used by Hawk Plant Hire in The Grange, Loppington, near Wem, can now go ahead despite fears the scale of the expansion is more than the village can cope with.
The scheme had been met with opposition from Loppington Parish Council and residents.
Parish councillors were concerned the development represented a 45 per cent rise in numbers of houses in Loppington.
Objection letters sent to Shropshire Council also raised fears about increased traffic, crime and vandalism.
But members of Shropshire Council’s north area regulatory committee unanimously approved the project at a meeting in Wem yesterday.
Councillor Paul Wynn, member for Prees, said the development would be good news because amounts of heavy traffic visiting Hawk Plant Hire’s site and using nearby roads would be reduced.
He said: “It would be great to get that plant out of the village.”
Councillor Vince Hunt, member for Oswestry West, said: “Nobody can refute the need for more affordable housing.”
