Meeting over housing plans

Tuesday 21st July 2009, 10:45AM BST.

homes2Controversial plans to almost double the size of a north Shropshire village by building 36 homes, roads, parking areas and a village green, were due to be discussed at a meeting today.

The development is earmarked for a 1.35 hectare site used by Hawk Plant Hire in The Grange, Loppington, near Wem.

But the idea has been met with opposition from Loppington Parish Council and residents.

The council has raised fears about the scale of the development, which it says will represent a 45 per cent increase in numbers of houses in the village.

Residents’ letters of objection have raised fears over increased traffic and an increase in crime and vandalism.

Developer Hawk Developments plans to make nine of the homes available as affordable housing if the scheme gets the go-ahead from Shropshire Council.

In a report to members, council officers are recommending the scheme is approved.

The report says: “The scheme will not have an unacceptable impact on the amenities of the neighbouring residents or the adjacent listed building and the removal of the existing business will improve highway safety on the local road network.”

Shropshire Council North Area Regulatory Committee was due to decide on the proposals at a meeting being held at Edinburgh House, Wem, at 3pm.
