Hopes for health village jobs

hospital-3More than 100 jobs could be created as part of a £50 million new mental health “village” in Shrewsbury.

Health chiefs today unveiled their vision for the 120-bed replacement of Shelton Hospital – the last Victorian “asylum”.

And they plan to lodge a planning application for the in-patient facilities next month, amid hopes work on the major scheme could begin in 2011.

The ageing Shelton Hospital’s buildings are no longer suitable and plans for the redevelopment have been on the cards for some time with the most recent plans outlined last year costing £38 million.

But today South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust revealed it has drawn up fresh plans for five new buildings on about a quarter of a 10 acre site south of Shelton.

Andrew Hughes, project director, said: “The trust is absolutely committed to creating the best  possible environment for service users that get in-patient care.

“Our intention is to create the environment that allows them to thrive and improve through their care. This is exciting. It’s about investing in a series of services. It’s very important we have the best possible buildings to provide services from.”

He said the intention with the in-patient facilities was to provide more of a “village” than a hospital setting, with a bank, shop and restaurant on site.
