A new visitor centre which will take people back into the 1800s has opened in Telford.

Blists Hill Victorian Town opened its new visitor centre yesterday as part of a £12 million regeneration scheme at the site.

The centre will act as the gateway to the Victorian Town and the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.

Steve Miller, Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust chief executive, said that he hoped the development would bring in thousands of extra visitors each year.

Mr Miller said: “This development is without doubt the largest and most ambitious capital project the trust has ever undertaken in its 40 years of existence.

“Following the successful opening of Canal Street at Easter, we are thrilled to be able to open our new visitor centre in time for the school holidays.” As part of the opening, one family was given VIP treatment – including a meal at the new restaurant and the chance to dress in full period costume.

The new visitor centre and the development of Canal Street is expected to bring thousands of extra visitors through the doors each year.

Organisers say the launch event was a great success and it is hoped families will visit the attraction through the school summer holidays.
