Officers’ concerns over pub disorder
Monday 20th July 2009, 2:18PM BST.
Police were called to deal with 16 disorders at one Shrewsbury pub in less than three years, figures showed today.
Officers have raised concerns about the Rock and Fountain pub in Castle Foregate, including concerns about drugs. They have called for its premises licence to be reviewed.
The matter is due to be decided by Shropshire Council’s central area licensing committee on Friday.
A report to councillors says: “West Mercia Police have made an application for a review of a premises licence on the grounds the premises operates in such a manner as to undermine the crime and disorder, public safety and protection of children from harm licensing objectives.
“The application for review is supported by evidence relating to drug possession, drug use and drug dealing on the premises, together with details of 16 disorder incidents West Mercia Police recorded against the premises between December 2006 and May 2009.”
Councillors could take a number of actions, including issuing informal or formal warnings, modifying conditions of the licence, or preventing some licensable activities from taking place at the pub.
Robin Jones, owner of the pub, said today: “There are certain incidents that have been brought to my attention but when the police say there are 16 there must be four or five we have no knowledge of.”
