Iwelumo despair at injury setback

Monday 20th July 2009, 6:00PM BST.

iwelumo_chrisInjured striker Chris Iwelumo has undergone successful surgery on his broken foot – and spoken of his devastation at missing the start of Wolves’ Premier League campaign.

The Scottish international suffered a broken metatarsal during the club’s first pre-season game in Australia having only just fought his way back to fitness after a knee ligament injury.

He has been ruled out for three months and said: “I was devastated. You work so hard to get yourself right and everyone had come back in fantastic shape and I got injured in the first few minutes of the first game.

“I was feeling good and enjoying training and was looking forward to the season. It is difficult to take, but it’s part and parcel of football and I’ll just have to get on with it.

“If ever anyone needed any inspiration then you only have to look at how George Elokobi came back from a much more serious injury last season.

“His attitude is spot on and he never complained and that is always the best way to be when you’re coming back from injury.”

Meanwhile, Wolves target James McCarthy is still pondering whether to move to Molineux or chose Wigan instead.

The 18-year-old £2m midfielder from Hamilton Academical has completed talks with both clubs.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: “It’s a young man facing a big, big decision and the delay is understandable.

“There is absolutely no pressure from here on a decision.”

Scottish based reports suggest that Wigan may be slight favourites.

But McCarthy said: “I was impressed with what Wolves had to say, I spent the morning with them.

“The stadium is impressive and the facilities are great. I met Mick McCarthy and we had a good chat.

“Wigan was great too. I was on the phone to Roberto Martinez during the day because he wanted to know what was happening.”
