School praised for overcoming issues
Saturday 18th July 2009, 10:42AM BST.
Education inspectors have praised a Telford secondary school for surviving a difficult period with staffing problems.
Ercall Wood Technology College was judged by Ofsted to be good in all areas.
The report said: “This is a good school. It has been through a difficult period of high staffing turbulence, which had resulted in low standards of English and particularly mathematics, but these issues have now been overcome.”
It added: “The school is on course to have a full complement of staff by September 2009.
“The school’s data clearly shows students are now making better progress and standards are rising but are currently still below national averages.
“Good teaching can be seen throughout all departments. Students know their targets and feedback identifies good work. Improvements in teaching have reduced the occurrences of poor behaviour.
“However, parents rightly remain concerned about this and about the numbers of supply staff teaching in some departments.
“The school has put appropriate measures in place so that occurrences of poor behaviour have minimal impact on learning.”
The school was rated as good on overall effectiveness, achievement and standards, teaching and learning, personal development and well-being, the extent to which learners adopt healthy lifestyles, the behaviour of learners, curriculum and other activities and leadership and management.
Headteacher Kathryn Owen-Reece said: “I am delighted to be able to report Ercall Wood has once again been judged as a ‘good’ school.
“Throughout this rigorous process, Ofsted have taken into account the views of parents, pupils, staff and governors. Over two-thirds of lessons were judged as good, which is a credit to the teaching staff.
“Nonetheless, we will continue to strive hard to continue to improve, in order to support our youngsters and give them the best opportunities in their school life.”
