Lembit speaks out over ‘relationship’
Saturday 18th July 2009, 11:22AM BST.
Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik has today spoken out about his relationship with former-Wonderbra girl Katie Green saying they are “not dating” but launching a public campaign.
He said reports about them being a couple are “untrue” but said they are “good friends” who have been busy working together on a campaign – “Say No To Size Zero”. There were claims the Liberal Democrat has been dating the 21-year-old model.
Despite denying the reports, the 44-year-old, who has dated Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia and TV Weathergirl Sian Lloyd, said he was “flattered” to have been linked with Katie.
He said: “I met Katie a few months ago, but obviously I knew who she was long before then – I’d read her story about leaving Wonderbra after being told she was too fat.”
The 5ft 10ins size 12 model left Wonderbra after refusing to bow to pressure to trim two stone and has now signed up with the bra firm’s rival Ultimo.
Mr Opik added: “We got talking and she told me about her campaign and we decided to join forces to help launch it. Our aim is to try and put a stop to size zero models, and models with an unhealthy BMI, (body mass index) modelling on the catwalk and in major advertising campaigns.”
He said a petition had been launched which will be taken to the Prime Minister once they reach 20,000 signatures. Mr Opik said he would also be asking the Government to put a policy in place ensuring all models are health checked before under taking any modelling assignments.
Mr Opik said: “I admire the fact she wants to make people realise you don’t have to starve yourself to become a model, it shows a great political mind and I really respect her for that.”
Katie said: “Lembit has really helped me promote this campaign and it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.”
