Officer ‘horsed around’ with inmates

Friday 17th July 2009, 12:58PM BST.

SEXY 1 SL 14A former officer at Shrewsbury prison, who claims she was bullied out of a job near Wolverhampton for being too sexy, would “horse around” with inmates, a tribunal heard.

Workmates of Amitjo Kajla saw her allow inmates to touch her on the arms and shoulders and were also concerned that prisoners did how they pleased around her, the hearing heard.

The 22-year-old, whose ex-boyfriend was serving time at Stoke Heath Young Offenders Institute, near Market Drayton, for armed robbery, preferred to be friends with prisoners rather than being assertive, according to workmates.

Miss Kajla claims she was forced to quit her job at Brinsford Young Offenders Institution, near Wolverhampton, after staff criticised her for being too sexy.

Senior officer Shaun Elcock told the tribunal: “I witnessed her on one occasion horsing around with prisoners. They tapped her on the right shoulder and walked to her left.”

Miss Kajla, of Birmingham Road, Wolverhampton, is seeking compensation for constructive dismissal, alleging she was forced to resign in April last year after barbed remarks by colleagues about her appearance and behaviour.

Jenny Smith, head of business management at the prison, said she warned Miss Kajla about her make-up and inappropriate clothing.

“I had a meeting with her and told her she was drawing unwanted attention from young adults,” she said. The hearing continues.
