Funding crisis hits college
Friday 17th July 2009, 1:03PM BST.
Millions of pounds has been lost through the “catastrophic mismanagement” of a flagship college rebuilding programme – delaying the £60 million revamp of Telford College, according to a report out today.
The Learning and Skills Council has pulled the plug on funding for 144 projects across the country. A cash shortage means plans to transform Telford College, which would have created jobs as well as a fire station, have been put on hold for at least a year.
The Commons Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills select committee has been investigating the financial fiasco of the capital programme in further education colleges.
MPs on the cross-party panel blamed the Learning and Skills Council – the Government agency responsible for handing out funds – and the now defunct Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, for the funding crisis.
