Town graffiti hotspots tackled

Thursday 16th July 2009, 6:00PM BST.

Graffiti “hotspots” in Shrewsbury have been treated with anti-graffiti paint.

The move is a response by Shropshire Council to calls for action from town residents and businesses.

The council has been carrying out a programme of cleaning up graffiti since April.

Graffiti has been removed from areas such as Castle Walk, Drayton Passage and Wingfield Gardens in Ditherintgton.

The work has been co-ordinated with other environmental maintenance services such as litterpicking, sweeping shuts and grass cutting. David Roberts, the council’s cabinet member for local environment and economy, said: “We are committed to tackling graffiti and making Shrewsbury look its best.

“We have listened to residents’ views and I am pleased we have been able to carry out these works. I hope that now these areas have been cleaned it will encourage graffiti offenders to keep them clean.”

The shornecliffe drive area of copthorne has obviously been missed. This area is covered in graffiti the garden fences that back onto the army fields are on a daily basis been covered in graffiti nobody is doing anything to remove it or catch the offenders.Would Mr Roberts like to tell us what he intends to do about it please. It always seems a good idea to make an area for young people but this area is no more than an area to drink under age and smoke various items. My last question is did the counciller who campaigned for this area live in the area i doubt it

Once again, short-sighted policies by Shropshire Council who could easily be stifling the works of Shropshire’s “Banksy”. Youngsters should be encouraged to channel their creativity legally and graffiti walls should be made available, especially as the school holidays are coming.
