Simpson seeks new right winger

Thursday 16th July 2009, 11:30AM BST.

paul-simpson5-sadManager Paul Simpson today set about bringing a replacement right winger to Shrewsbury Town – after hitting out at “underhand tactics” in Chris Humphrey’s move to Motherwell.

Humphrey’s departure north of the border was confirmed yesterday afternoon when the winger signed a three-year-deal with the Clydesdale Scottish Premier League club.

That took the Town boss by surprise, with Simpson confident as recently as Monday that Humphrey would be signing the two-year-deal offered to him by Shrewsbury.

But, speaking after last night’s 1-0 victory in the opening friendly at Northwich, Simpson has now turned his thoughts towards bringing in fresh blood.

“It’s an area we need to address now,” said Simpson. “We thought we would be getting Chris to stay.

“On Monday afternoon when he left training, he told a couple of players that it was all being sorted and he was expecting to sign.

“I had a conversation with him and it looked that way so it has come a bit out of the blue.

“Although I have made enquiries about other players, there is nothing to say at the moment but it is a position we will be looking to strengthen.”

Simpson admitted he has been disappointed with the conduct of both Humphrey – who has been considering Town’s offer for two months – and his agent.

“I’m very disappointed but that’s up to him and his agent how they have dealt with it,” he added.

“We have dealt with it as we saw fit.

“We actually paid him yesterday – his wages have gone into the bank so unfortunately we will have to try and recover the rest of the month’s wages where he will not be working for us.

“There is nothing we can do about that. He has chosen to do it that way – whether it’s him or his agent.

“Unfortunately, there have been some underhand tactics going on throughout the last month which disappoint me.

“We have to take it on the chin and just move on. As we stand, there has been no contact to me from Chris or his agent.

“I believe it has all gone through.

“We have been asked about international clearance. That’s the end of it and we wish him good luck and move on.”

“That took the Town boss by surprise”…..did it? Simmo’s been stating for a couple of weeks now that, because of the uncertainty, Humphrey wasn’t in his plans.

….more importantly, do we get any money for him?

Asamoah should never wear the Town shirt again, ive never booed an ex town player, not even Tolley, but if Asamoah came back I would, He walked out on Town, when he had a contract, he disrespected his fellow players, and showed what he thought of the Town fans.. NEVER AGAIN ..

Confused, thats not quite the way it was though. You have managed to take one side of a story and publish it as fact. I think you will find that Derek had been told he was being sold to Swindon for £50k against his wishes. He had already been told he was no longer part of Peters’ plans. He was then offered a trial at Nice which he was refused permission to attend as Peters wanted him to join Swindon. Now what would you do?

Poor Chris will find it too cold north of the border, he appeared to freeze at Wembley! He has potential but will never be as good as he thinks he is.

maybe we should look at some guys on this side of the atlantic . There are some promising looking young players for the usa and mexico who need pro clubs. They are in the national squads. They have pace and ball skills.Do we look or scout players overseas

The Profesional Footballers Association (PFA) actually agreed that Asamoah acted illigally over his transfer and backed the club 100% in the way they acted. This is one of the very few occasions the PFA has taken a clubs side over that of a player. Asamoah had been at eight clubs in six seasons and we’d helped to get his career back on track and he then repaid the fans by walking out on the club.

Like Confused I wouldn’t welcome Asamoah back to the club when normally I’m very happy to welcome back former players to the club when they play for new clubs.

As for Chris Humphrey I hope he does well at Motherwell as he was a likeable lad whilst he was with us. I don’t think he deveoped quite as well as we all hoped, but maybe a move might help his career. Perhaps we might see Worrell from WBA signed as his replacement?
