Supermarket bid rivals to present facts

Wednesday 15th July 2009, 12:14PM BST.

Rival developers who are bidding to build a multi-million pound supermarket in Oswestry are to make key presentations on their proposed schemes to councillors next month.

Each party will be expected to make a factual presentation to Shropshire Council’s strategic regulatory committee at the meeting.

Councillors will then make a final decision on which application gets the go-ahead later in the year, possibly in October.

Three rival bids for a new supermarket have so far been lodged with the council.

Developer Liberty Mercian, in partnership with Oswestry Town Council, wants to build on the Smithfield livestock site, while timber firm Richard Burbidge wants to relocate from its Whittington Road site, allowing Tesco to build a store in its place.

Oswestry firms JT Hughes and Guttercrest want to relocate and build a store across their neighbouring sites in Victoria Road.

Town firm J Ross Developments has also released plans to build a store on Oswestry’s Central Car Park.

Shropshire Council spokesman Gareth Proffitt today said: “Subject to a small number of outstanding issues relating to each being resolved it is likely that the applications will be determined within the next few months, possibly at the beginning of October.”

Now we have Morrisons they can do whatever they like as my custom will be going there. We have more than enough supermarkets, I wish people would realise we are a small market town, lets keep it that way.

It is not just about where local people choose to do their shopping. The benefit of another supermarket and retail units will be bringing in more people from outside of Oswestry and boosting our local business. We are stuck right between Shrewsbury and Wrexham and need something like this development to bring people into our town and spend money in our shops.
