Murder inquiry club to reopen

Wednesday 15th July 2009, 12:24PM BST.

Part of a Shrewsbury nightclub at the centre of a murder inquiry is due to reopen this month following talks between its owners and police.

Liquid and Diva nightclub in Raven Meadows has been closed since June 29.

It was shut following the death of 41-year-old father-of-two Darren Griffiths, from Harmer Hill, following a disturbance at the site in the early hours of June 29.

Police today said the Diva section would reopen on July 24. However, the Liquid part will remain closed.

Police and the nightclub’s management held talks yesterday when the decision was made to open part of the club again.

Tony Mantle, police licensing officer for Shropshire, said: “The police and club owners are working together to ensure the club meets all necessary requirements.”

A review of the licence for Liquid and Diva will take place at a meeting of the licensing sub-committee of Shropshire Council on August 20.

A spokesman for the owners of Liquid and Diva said: “We will continue to co-operate fully with the police, meeting with them as and when required to assist with their investigations and to discuss the future operation of Liquid and Diva.”

Doormen Neil Stokes, 22, of Spring Gardens, Shrewsbury, and Daryl Brown, 32, of Severn Drive, Wellington, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court charged with the murder of Mr Griffiths on Monday. The case was adjourned until September 21.
