Bomere make final after thriller

cricket-ball21There will be a new name on the Shropshire Star Village Knockout trophy this year – with holders Allscott falling at the semi-final stage.

They lost at home to Bomere Heath on Sunday, who will now play Albrighton in the final at Shrewsbury on September 6.

Bomere racked up 200-8 from their 40 overs, Ian Gillespie top-scoring with 74 while Ben Waters was the pick of the bowlers with 4-28.

Allscott’s hopes were ended halfway through the 37th over as they were bowled out for 184 despite fine knocks from Steve Powell (59) and Tim Clare (48). Gillespie was the star again with 4-24, while skipper Ian Day (2-16) and Andy Oliver (2-59) also contributed.

“It was an exceptionally good result because we had a couple of second team players, the third team captain and another one from the third team playing,” said Day.

“The lads were absolutely awesome and it was one of the best games of cricket I’ve ever played in because it kept swinging one way then the other.

“Ian bowled superbly, but two of our unsung heroes were Chris Stevens and Mattie Jones and it was very much a team effort.”

Albrighton booked their place in the final with a fairly routine victory over Lilleshall of the FBC Manby Bowdler League.

Lilleshall notched 143-7 from their 40 overs but that never looked to be enough.

And an unbeaten 63 from Mark Bissell helped Albrighton to victory with 11 overs to spare, despite having crashed to 24-2 in the early stages.

A 97-run third-wicket partnership with Nick Archibald (32) was pivotal as the visitors eventually reached 145-3, Jason Summers hitting the winning boundary in the 29th over.

“It was quite comfortable in the end, and we look forward to the final with Bomere Heath now,” said skipper Darren Shimmons.

“We play them in the league on Saturday so that will be like a practice game for the knockout now.

“We will probably go in as favourites given our league position, but we are happy with that.”
