One-off SVR train to London

Monday 13th July 2009, 12:55PM BST.

A direct train service from Bridgnorth to London will run for the first time next month.

And railways bosses are hoping the one-off train using the Severn Valley Railway will pave the way for other services from the market town to the capital.

The Chiltern Railways train will leave Bridgnorth at 7.45am, serving Hampton Loade, Highley, Arley and Bewdley, before reaching Kidderminster and carrying on to London Marylebone on August 15, arriving at 11.59am.

Nick Ralls, general manager at the SVR, said: “We are very pleased to offer this service in conjunction with Chiltern Railways and I hope that it will lead to future partnerships with Chiltern.

“At the moment this is a ‘toe in the water’ exercise to see if something like this would be popular.”

Mr Ralls said the people involved in driving and guarding the train on that day would be SVR volunteers as well as Chiltern employees.

He said: “We will look to do it again at holiday times or Christmas.”

Limited tickets, which cost £50, are available by calling Business Travel on (01494) 420117, Mondays to Fridays from 9.30am to 4.30pm. On the way back customers will have to change at Kidderminster on to what is likely to be a steam train to take them back up the SVR line.

The return train leaves London Marylebone at 5.20pm.

Excellent enterprise by both Chiltern Railways and the Severn Valley Railway. I am sure that it will be very successful.

Another new service for Shropshire, as pioneered by the Wrexham. Shropshire and Marylebone Railway.
