MP’s call to scrap ‘burner’

Monday 13th July 2009, 11:35AM BST.

battlefield-topShrewsbury’s MP is to call for controversial £60 million plans for an incinerator in the town to be scrapped during high level talks with waste bosses later this month.

Daniel Kawczynski said he would be meeting with regional directors for Veolia, the firm behind the proposals for the incinerator at Battlefield, which has provoked huge public opposition.

The Tory MP said he had also asked Councillor Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, to attend the gathering as he too admits the matter needs to be reviewed in the wake of 600 letters of objection and comments received by residents.

Mr Kawczynski said: “I have got a meeting coming up with Veolia later this month and I have invited Keith Barrow to attend. I am going to be formally requesting that the incinerator plans are dropped.”

Donald Macphail, of Veolia, said he would be explaining to Mr Kawczynski that an energy from waste facility was just one part of the waste strategy which also includes collection, recycling and waste minimisation.

‘Donald Macphail, of Veolia, said he would be explaining to Mr Kawczynski that an energy from waste facility was just one part of the waste strategy which also includes collection, recycling and waste minimisation.’

The problem with the above is that this one part of the waste strategy will undermine other vital parts (waste minimisation and recycling) for the next 27 years.

    Well done, Mr Kawczynski.

    Dear Mr Kawczynski.
If you wait a while at Shrewsbury bus station there may be another bandwagon coming along that you can jump on.

good on you Dan, dioxins are not wanted round here, there are better ways of waste management like recycling and composting i for one would object to incineration any time and any where in anyones back yard because its poisoness and wasteful and hinders recycling efforts

    we dont want it here

its a terrible site for it, next to schools and flats and its illegal in the local plan because incineration was specifically ruled out here

This incinerator would be a step back not a move forward.

    Matt Hand,

Whilst I do support and participate in recycling as much of my waste as possible, what do you propose I do with that proportion that cannot be recycled or composted? We must have either refuse dumps (which are full) or incinerators somewhere unless you have an alternative suggestion for the disposal of such items? I would really like to know what you would propose to do with this sort of waste (and I’m not being facetious – I am really interested!) and if it’s a viable suggestion why not put it forward to the appropriate authorities?

i agree with the MP, scrap it now, because its a PFI deal our taxes will go up for years to fund this monster which is ‘loaned’ from the french firm on a long term hire purchase agreement with interest rates like a credit card
