Monday 13th July 2009, 11:09AM BST.
A Shropshire Tory peer, Lord Kingsland, has died at the age of 67.
Best known in the county as former Euro MP Christopher Prout, he was this year’s president of Shropshire Horticultural Society, organisers of Shrewsbury Flower Show.
Lord Kingsland, who lived in the Shrewsbury area, was called to the bar in 1972 and appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 1988. He became a Recorder of the Crown Court in 1997 and a deputy High Court judge in 2005.
He served as a member of the Territorial Army with the Queen’s Royal Lancers Division and on the staff of Headquarters 3rd Armoured Division.
In 1979 he was elected to the European Parliament as Conservative member for Shropshire and Staffordshire, serving until 1994. In that year he took his seat in the House of Lords and was opposition spokesman on legal affairs.
In 1997 he was appointed Shadow Lord Chancellor.
Lord Kingsland attended Manchester University and Queens College, Oxford. Today Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski paid tribute to him.
Mr Kawczynski said: “He was a highly respected member of the House of Lords with his legal expertise.
“I met him on numerous occasions and I am very saddened and shocked by his death. It is a great loss.” It is understood that Lord Kingsland died after a short illness.
Conservative Party leader, David Cameron, is expected to issue a statement later today.

I was very sad to read this. I remember him as Euro MP when I met him on a number of occasions, and although we were on opposite sides politically I know he worked incredibly hard to represent his constituency, always being prepared to listen to suggestions from people of all political persuasions.
He was always a delight to talk to and I’m sure many of today’s politicians could have learned a lot from him.
A great loss.
