Villagers aim to conquer nerves
Saturday 11th July 2009, 10:11AM BST.
Quatt are confident they will not be riddled by nerves as they aim to move a step closer to fulfilling every cricketer’s dream tomorrow.
The Bridgnorth-based side entertain Lancashire outfit Great Eccleston, who play in the Northern Premier League, in the last 16 of the nPower National Village Knockout (2pm).
There is plenty at stake with the winners moving into the quarter-final and within two matches of a showpiece final at Lord’s.
Quatt reached the same stage last year before suffering a painful defeat to Shipley Hall.
But captain Adrian Evans believes his team will be stronger for that experience in the 40-overs per side clash.
“There were probably were a few nerves last year and we ended up losing a close game, so hopefully we will deal with the occasion and perform well,” he said.
“You know you are going to be playing a good team when it comes to this stage of the competition but on our day, we will have a good chance.”
Overseas players aren’t eligible for the competition, so young New Zealand ace Dean Robinson misses out.
And former Wellington second team skipper Dave Street is also an absentee because tournament regulations state a player must have spent at least a season with their club to be cleared to play.
It’s also a big day for Shrewsbury who head to Walsall for a last 32 tie in the Cockspur National Knockout.
The London Road men should travel with confidence after manufacturing a winning position for themselves – they were 16-0 chasing 152 for victory in 45 overs – when the tie was washed out two weeks ago.
“That was unfortunate but hopefully we can go over there and perform well,” said captain Ed Foster.
Wes Robinson and Alex Blofield are both unavailable for tomorrow, so James Gale and Jon Anders join the team which played Barnt Green today.
