Man fights for life after car hits tree

Saturday 11th July 2009, 10:59AM BST.

A 19-year-old man was today fighting for life in hospital after a car careered off a Shropshire road and smashed into a tree.

The teenager, who has not been named but was believed to be the driver of the car, suffered multiple injuries in the crash on the A488 between Lydham and Bishop’s Castle at about 6.20pm yesterday.

An ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene and the Midlands Air Ambulance was also scrambled from Cosford to airlift the man to Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham.

An ambulance service spokesman said the man suffered serious multiple injuries and received emergency treatment at the scene.

Inspector Gurjit Singh, of West Mercia Police, said two other men who had been in the vehicle at the time escaped with just minor injuries. The 19-year-old was today critical but stable.

Meanwhile, investigations are continuing into a fatal crash on the A41 south of Newport at 11.35pm on Thursday which left the road blocked for at least 17 hours.

Police today confirmed the man who died in the smash involving a car and a lorry was from overseas. His details will not be released until he has been formally identified. Constable Mike Evans, of Telford police, said temporary traffic lights were now in place on the A41 at Woodcote.
