Herd still hoping for a chance
Saturday 11th July 2009, 11:57AM BST.
The Football League career of former Shrewsbury Town defender Ben Herd is hanging in the balance.
The right-back was released by Paul Simpson at the end of last season and, despite clubs now returning to pre-season training, has yet to find a new deal.
Hereford and Brentford both showed interest in the early weeks of the summer, but that has now waned.
While most professional footballers are busy preparing for the new season, Herd’s anxious wait to secure a new deal goes on.
And the 24-year-old has started training with Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Colney Heath, his sister’s boyfriend’s club, to maintain his fitness levels.
“Nothing surprises me in football but it is a bit wierd,” said the affable Herd, who could have the opportunity of training with an un-named League Two club next week.
“I thought I did pretty well at Shrewsbury overall. I’ve played 165 Football League games which is a good number for a 24-year-old and I’m young enough to keep improving.
“I thought I would be given a bit more of a chance but it hasn’t worked out so far.
“I feel really strong – I’m keeping myself fit and training with a non-League team who do an unbelievable amount of fitness work.
“I’m pretty philosophical about it all at the moment and hopefully my chance will come.”
