Children as young as seven are putting their safety at risk by jumping into a weir in Shrewsbury, it has been claimed.

Residents are concerned about youngsters playing in the waterway, off Sydney Avenue in the Castlefields area of the town.

Police have urged parents to be responsible, ensure their children are safe and warned them not to allow their youngsters to play in the weir.

The concerns were raised at a meeting of the North East Shrewsbury Local Joint Committee at the Martin Wilson School in Castlefields last night.

Resident Jim Williams, who lives in Castlefields, told the meeting: “There is one problem, especially down the weir.

“When the weather is really hot seven or eight year olds are jumping into the weir. It needs to be sorted,” the 62-year-old added.

Constable Peter Franklin, from the Castlefields and Heathgates Local Policing Team, urged parents to be more responsible.

He said: “If you’re a responsible adult and you know your kids are going near water you should be with them.”
