Saints hoping for big Euro cup night
Thursday 9th July 2009, 10:20AM BST.
European football comes to Shropshire for the first time tonight – with The New Saints hoping to celebrate the biggest result in their history.
The Welsh Premier side will look to shrug off past failures by clinching a first European scalp when they tackle Icelandic side Fram Reykjavik at Oswestry’s Park Hall (kick-off 7pm).
Playing their 11th season in Europe, TNS are fully aware they have yet to progress past the first hurdle of the two-legged format.
But there is realistic belief that they can put the record straight in the newly formed Europa League in tonight’s return against Fram – despite trailing 2-1 from last week’s first leg in Iceland.
“If there is a chance of getting through, then this could be the one,” said head coach Andy Cale ahead of the first qualifying round tie.
“Having experienced Europe for a number of seasons, Fram are not as strong as some of the teams we have faced and we have a realistic chance this time.
“We’ve certainly got everything to play for.”
It is a big night for the Oswestry club, who will be staging their first European tie on home surrounds.
Their plans, however, have been hindered by a couple of injuries picked up in Iceland with defender Phil Baker missing training earlier in the week due to a dead leg.
Fellow defenders Steve Evans and newcomer Danny Holmes are also battling to shake off knocks while forward Matt Berkeley had a flu virus.
Playing on their artificial surface at Park Hall should give TNS the edge, but Cale does not believe that it will give his side a significant advantage.
“Against some teams I think we would have a big advantage, but against Fram I don’t think it will be the case,” he said.
Should they win, there will be no time for TNS to rest on their laurels as they fly out Sigma, of the Czech Republic, for next Thursday’s second qualifying round.
