Murder case club remains shut
Thursday 9th July 2009, 11:31AM BST.
A Shropshire nightclub at the centre of a police murder probe following an incident last month is to remain shut for a second weekend, it emerged today.
Liquid and Diva in Raven Meadows, Shrewsbury, has been closed since 41-year-old father-of-two Darren Griffiths, from Harmer Hill, near Shrewsbury, died following a disturbance at the premises in the early hours of June 29.
A spokeswoman for Liquid and Diva today said the nightspot would remain closed until an internal review by club bosses was carried out.
She said: “Liquid and Diva remains closed at this time and, although the police have completed their investigations at the venue, we do not intend to reopen the nightclub until our internal review into the incident is complete.
“We can confirm that the police have requested a review of the licence at Liquid and Diva and understand this is standard procedure given the tragic incident that occurred.”
hropshire Council and police in the town are due to carry out a licence review of the premises next month.
Gareth Proffitt, from the council, said: “A licence review is scheduled for August 20 by Shropshire Council licensing sub-committee but that date is still to be confirmed.
“The club is currently closed under an agreement with the police and the owners, but if the police are happy for the club to reopen it can do so before the review hearing date.”
l Two men have been charged with Mr Griffiths’s murder and have appeared in court.
Another two men arrested as part of the police inquiry have been released on police bail.
