Murals go on show at plant

Artwork created by schoolchildren from across Telford and Wrekin has been officially unveiled and is now being displayed in the outdoor recreation area of GKN’s Hadley plant.

Children aged eight to 15 from Captain Webb Primary in Dawley, Aqueduct Primary and Abraham Darby Academy, in Madeley, designed the murals.

Artists appointed by the Telford & Wrekin Council’s art development team and learning mentors from the schools helped the children create artwork as part of a 10-week project, commissioned by Chassis Systems Ltd at the company.

The pupils came up with the ideas, based on their hopes for the future including the kind of jobs and things they would like to do.

Councillor Miles Hosken, cabinet member for arts and culture, said: “This is a really exciting project that has drawn on the talents of the artists supported by the council’s arts development team and all the school children.”

Caris Jackson, lead artist on the project, said: “The project involved a lot of hard work but it’s really paid off. The artwork is fantastic and you can see how far the children’s confidence has grown over the 10 weeks.

Alan Wilson, plant manager at GKN, added: “The young people involved have created really bright and colourful artwork that has helped create a much nicer working environment for all at the factory. This project is all part of GKN Telford ongoing commitment to community involvement.”
