Your shopping experiences

Following recent letters in the Shropshire Star about the service some of our readers have received in Tesco, we’d like to know how you find the service in your local supermarket.
Where have you received the best service? Let us know in the comments forum below.
Our latest letter on the topic reads as follows:
Assistant at Tesco also rude after sale
I read with interest Carol Henderson’s letter regarding help or lack of it at Tesco’s, Wrekin Retail Park. I had a similar unpleasant experience there.
We went into the store to pick up some drinks. I happened to glance at the receipt, and noticed that three bottles of wine, offered at three for £10 had been charged separately.
I queried this at the customer service desk. The assistant briskly said she would check the display.
When she returned she said she could not find the display and that she did not drink so she had no idea where they could be.
Could she not have asked an assistant on the wine department? To cut a long story short she was very rude and unhelpful.
The result was I was very unhappy and Tesco has lost yet another customer.
Beforehand we purchased slabs from Homebase and the young man who served us there gave great service a credit to Homebase – Tesco should take note.

Denise,
Maybe you caught her on a bad day – we all have one and tend to inflict it on the next person we see rather than those who put us in a bad mood – not that that excuses the assistant’s respone to you but sometimes you have to take these things with a pinch of salt.
I, myself went into Tesco on Monday night this week to purchase silken tofu, not an everyday shopping item. Two staff tried to help but were not sure what it was to guide me so I approached the customer servie desk who found it on the computer but did not have it in stock. Okay they didn’t have what I wanted but at least my time wasn’t wasted hunting.
I think it works both ways – if you receive particularly good customer service you should remark on it to the person who has been so helpful. I don’t think enough people do this and I do try to make a positive effort myself to let people know when they’ve done a good job.
It makes them feel good and then if they do have a bad day they might be less likely to show it.
In these times when perhaps higher wages are harder to come by and people are starting the day worrying what bills are going to come in, having someone tell you you’re doing great can sometimes compensate for lesser wages!

Two events to report.
Two weeks ago picked up an item that offered 2 for the price of one as marked on the shelf label. Subsequently, attended the customer services desk, where after waiting for sometime, the attendant apologised for the delay. After completing their investigations (confirmed the shelf label did indicate the 2 4 1 offer) initially offered a refund. Then after a pause, the attendant decided not to proceed with the refund without any explanation.
Also last year I picked up a pint of milk from the ‘in date’ counter and failed to notice the use by date was from the day before. After paying for the goods and whilst packing I noted the use by date and commented to the cashier. The cashier asked me to report the event to customer services, which I did. The customer services attendant said that there is nothing they could do as the milk was already passed its use by date and I should have checked the date before placing the milk in my trolley.
I shop elsewhere.

I no longer shop at Tesco, Wrekin Retail Park – despite Suellans comments (I wonder if she works there?), I apparently on 2 separate occasions with 2 different representatives have “caught them on a bad day” at their supposed Customer Services desk.
That coupled with checkout operatives who have no problem talking amongst themselves (much like Boots staff used to have the reputation!).. to the point that the male operative on my checkout actually asked me to step aside so that they could speak their colleague working on the next checkout and continued to do so during the length of time I was waiting for my purchases to come through to bag (waiting a couple of times as the operative couldnt scan and talk simultaneously).
I wholeheartedly agree that good customer service should be applauded, but it wont get good unless the bad is highlighted and removed!

Just a general point regarding car parking at supermarkets.
In Spain if you go to a shopping centre or a supermarket you don’t have to pay for your parking.
You arrive at the shopping centre or supermaket and collect your ticket and the barrier opens.
When you leave you show your shopping receipt bar code to the red scanner and the barrier opens.
A lot easier and a lot cheaper in most cases than rip off Brittain.

I shop in Asda, the staff there are always helpful happy and cheerful. They will go out of their way to not only tell you where something you are looking for is…but they take you straight to it! The ladies on the tills are generally cheery and chatty, there are admittedly the odd one or two that seem more concerned in getting you away from their tills as fast as possible but they are in the minority. Prices are good and whats more the shelves are 99% of the time fully stocked and clearly priced and labelled.
Once upon a time I was a Tesco shopper, sadly no more.

I used to use Tesco groceries online until once when I used them they never delivered my shopping. I was supposed to have it delivered between the time slots but it never arrived, I phoend the helpdesk and they siad that it was on its way, if it had not arrived to phone back. Half an hour later and no shopping so phoned back and they phoned the store who couldn’t get in touch with the driver. Yet again I phoned back when still not arrived and was told that they had a problem with the van. No one could be bothered to inform me. After 10pm I gave up with it. The next day I phoned up and they hadn’t even been bothered to arrange another delivery. Made things worse when later on in the week they had taken my money out for the shopping I never had. I had to phone them to get it back.
I have never used them again and now go to Asda who I have never had a problem with.

I get irritated at Tesco by the staff who collect internet orders. They are always in such a rush to get to the next aisle and do not care about customers as they force them out of the way with their huge trollies full of baskets.

I will give ASDA top marks for customer service, if they get it wrong they offer you a voucher and they apolgies.tesco and morrisons just change the item, no sorry….

i have stopped shopping at tesco,i kept giving it another go due to it being the store nearest to the battlefield outpost, but ended up getting mad each time i went there.
The staff are rude and the internet shopping staff are a nightmare, i did try to get out of their way of the oversized trolleys but it became such a problem i felt like shouting at them.
the large isles would be blocked by shelf stackers trolleys who looked as if tey couldn`t care less that the isles were blocked.
then the scan/pay yourself thing was always a bad experience leaving me think why do i come here! hate the place. sorry but i do.
shopping else were now and happy for it.

I went back to the Coop Monday as some milkshakes I had bought on the previous Friday were buy one get one free but one pack was out of date in October 2009 and the other June 28 2009. The latter one my son drank and was sick soon after as it was like cheese!
The manager was surprised and apologetic though tried to blame the suppliers. He immediately compensated me with a ten pound note and asked me to sign something for the supplier but I was sceptical about that part.
I felt satisfied that I was quickly given some compensation though I know I could have taken it further.

I agree with H.St.John Peasbody about the internet shopping trollies I have nothing against internet shopping I have used the service myself but does it have to be done with the trollies in convoy, you have no chance of getting near the shelves to get anything .

What is very annoying is staff filling up selves and refusing to budge when you are trying to get a item off the shelf

Most of tescos staff are very polite and helpful, but they do seem to have quiet a few who are very rude and unhelpful. I’ve also bought milk which was out of date at the time of purchase. It wasn’t worth a trip back but the customer service line i rang was very unhelpful. It seemed to be my fault for buying it and not their fault for leaving it on the shelves.

No Andrew I don’t work at Tesco’s. I’m an accountant who just thinks it is easier to give a compliment than a criticism – I will concede that by comparison shopping in Asda is a friendlier and more pleasant experience – twice I’ve left my caskback in the self scan till and not remembered until about 3 hours later and twice the personnel on duty have handed it in for me to collect despite it being perhaps easier and more tempting to swipe it discreetly. It is refreshing to know there are still honest people out there!

My 25 year old daughter after being refused the right to buy CSI cd was asked how she bought alcohol. She had a young baby in a pram at the time.
Despite apologies we have never been back.

I recently started online shopping with Tesco, booked a 9 to 10pm slot, they arrived later, several fresh items were of poor quality, I requested carrier bags there were none, I requrested no substitution they did so anyway, when I tried to contact the helpline I had to wait over 15 minutes! Although they credit the delivery charge and gave an apology I felt that this was poor service! Never again shall I shop online.
With regard to the staff at Shrewsbury Tesco, have to agree they all look miserable and when asked for specific items are very unhelpful and look/speak at you as if “how dare you ask me a question”! I once asked the customer service desk for a specific type of birthday cake for my son’s birthday and the girl was so rude and just had that “look I can’t be bothered to look into it and see if I can get you one” look so I walked out and now use Asda and Morrisons. Service & staff more nicer!

I have shopped at TEsco’s Wellington Retail Park for years and Yes there are occassions when the checkout assistants chat ( Usually on the baskets only tills) but on the whole I find them to be a very good place to shop. I cannot abide rudeness and am first to object but I agree that people are fast to complain ( which puts staff in a bad mood for the next customer) but do not like giving out compliments. I find that smiling and chatting to someone automatically puts them in a good frame of mood. Whatever your mood is has a knock on effect to all around you. All I can say is go to Tesco’s with a smile on your face and be pleasant and you will be surprised how it works. There is too much negativity in this country. I think sometimes the customers are the one’s that are rude and need to complain in a civilised manner I have seen them causing scenes and thought I would not like to be on the other side facing them. My motto is Think about whether you would accept what you are giving out before saying / doing it.

Have not used Tesco for years.
Shop locally, support your local businesses. You may pay a bit more, but the service and quality is far better.
