Body found in river is identified
Wednesday 8th July 2009, 2:00PM BST.
A body pulled from the River Severn in Shrewsbury has been formally identified as missing man Christopher Wall, 21, of Castlefieds, police said today.
Police are appealing for help to piece together his last movements.
Mr Wall was formally identified yesterday afternoon after a post-mortem was carried out by a Home Office pathologist.
His body was found in the river near the weir in Castlefields just after 8am on Saturday, two days after his family reported him missing.
Officers are now working to establish how he came to be in the water and urged anyone who might have seen him in the area in the early hours of Thursday to get in touch on 03003 333000.
Mr Wall’s death is being treated as unexplained.
Inspector Sarah Wagstaff, of Shrewsbury police station, said: “We know that Mr Wall had been to a funeral on Wednesday afternoon and left the Telepost Club in Abbey Foregate shortly after midnight on Thursday.
“We believe he walked along Abbey Foregate and across the English Bridge, where CCTV appears to show him in the area between the end of the bridge and the bottom of Wyle Cop between about 12.25am and 12.30am.
“We believe he may then have headed down the steps from the bridge onto the towpath.
“There must have been people in the area at the time both on foot and in vehicles, as the English Bridge is a popular route home for those heading back from a night out.
“Mr Wall was white and was dressed in black trousers, a black Bench T-shirt with white lettering on the front and was of stocky build. He was clean-shaven and had short, dark hair.”
An inquest will be opened by the Mr John Ellery, coroner for Mid and North Shropshire, in due course.
