Carter calls for cash action

Wednesday 8th July 2009, 3:25PM BST.

AFC Telford United chairman Lee Carter is calling on Conference officials to take decisive action to sort out the financial mess in non-League football.

The Blue Square North looks set to start a team light, with Farsley Celtic having been thrown out for entering into administration after the league AGM.

On top of that, Northwich Victoria are due to start with a 10-point penalty, while it is a similar story for Chester City in the Blue Square Premier.

Farsley are appealing their expulsion, arguing that it is too late for them to gain entry to any other division.

And Carter has sympathy, arguing that draconian punishments should make way for more thought-out preventative measures.

“The Conference have to sort it out,” he said. “They can’t just keep booting teams out or deducting 10 points. They need to do something drastic, grab the bull by the horns and make clubs trade within their means.

“There’s enough brains in football to come up with something – whether it’s player caps, wage caps or whatever.

“This hurts every club in the league as we all lose one twenty-first of our income this year with Farsley being kicked out – for us that is £7,000-£10,000 for not being able to host that game.

“It would be different if Farsley were saying they cannot fulfil their fixtures, but if they can prove they can get through the season then they should be given the opportunity to do so.”

l Telford fans can now snap up tickets for the Shropshire Senior Cup final at Shrewsbury’s Prostar Stadium, which takes place a week on Saturday.

They are on sale, priced £10 for adults and £5 for concessions from the New Bucks Head between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.
