Safety fears as nuisance drivers race around town
Tuesday 7th July 2009, 11:06AM BST.
Nuisance drivers are speeding around roads in a north Shropshire town sparking concerns from residents and raising fears they are putting safety at risk.
Police today said they had received a number of reports about anti-social driving in Market Drayton and vowed to clampdown on drivers who are causing the problems.
And staff at the Tudor House Hotel have also raised concerns, claiming the pub is being given a bad name by motorists who drive badly along Cheshire Street in the town.
Stuart Willatt, from the pub, said boy racer drivers start driving at excessive speeds at about 4pm every day, and continue until midnight.
He said several drinkers at the pub, as well as hotel guests, have complained about the noise, and he is now concerned the pub will lose trade and get a bad reputation.
Mr Willatt said staff at the pub have reported the problem to police, but is worried the culprits are driving so dangerously someone could be killed.
He said: “It’s every night until midnight, and they go around and around. It annoys our customers and we are worried about losing trade. We are standing outside the front of the hotel and they are coming around the corner so fast they are losing control of their cars.
“We are a hotel so the residents are sleeping above it and they have commented, and we are losing trade. There is an online search engine where you search for pubs and hotels and we are getting bad reviews on it because of the noise.
“Its been going on for months now. It’s got twice as bad now it’s light nights.”
Maria Hawkaluk, a West Mercia police spokeswoman, said: “Those found to be driving in this manner will be dealt with robustly by officers.”
