Police probe attempted raid on fuel station kiosk
Tuesday 7th July 2009, 11:26AM BST.
Part of a petrol station in Telford was sealed off by police today after an intruder attempted to smash into the kiosk, operating on night service.
Tesco petrol station on the Wrekin Retail Park was targeted at about 1.40am when the station was open but unmanned.
A 33-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Police said it was unclear whether the break-in was successful but scenes of crime investigators were due on site this morning.
The station re-opened at 6am for pay at the pump customers only.
The station was due to open fully later this morning.
Alan Ritchings Tesco duty manager, said the station was open to self-service customers when the attempted break-in took place.
He said: “No-one was working there at the time, but as soon as the police arrived the station was closed off until this morning when it opened as usual at 6am.
“I am extremely pleased that no one got in and no staff were on site at the time. I want to reassure customers that as soon as today’s police investigation has taken place it will be business as usual.
“The whole thing will have been caught on CCTV which I am sure the police will be viewing.”
Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said: “We were called at 1.40am to suspicious behaviour at the petrol station.
“A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary a short time after the incident and he remains in custody.
“About £800 of damage was caused and forensic investigators will be carrying out further investigations this morning.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Telford police on 0300 333 3000.
