Licence review for town nightclub

Tuesday 7th July 2009, 11:29AM BST.

Liquid & DivaA Shrewsbury nightclub at the centre of a murder inquiry is to have its licence reviewed.

Liquid and Diva in Raven Meadows has been closed since last Monday when father-of-two Darren Griffiths, of Harmer Hill, was injured following a disturbance. He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where he later died. Police have already warned that the club will remain closed for the “forseeable fut-ure”.

But its premises licence will now face major scrutiny.

Maria Hawkaluk, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: “We can confirm that police have requested a review of the licence at Liquid and Diva nightclub in Shrewsbury.

“It is normal for all the relevant agencies to request a review of a premises licence in circumstances such as this.”

Carol Foster, licensing team leader for central area at Shropshire Council, said the application for a review was received yesterday and said a consultation period had started which will run until August 3 so people can register their views and comments with the authority.

Mrs Foster said that following the consultation a hearing would be held when a review of the licence would take place.

Last week Liquid and Diva said it was planning to “open as usual” for last weekend.

But police said the decision was taken to shut the club for the forseeable future in the interests of the police investigation.

The inquest on Mr Griffiths, 41, was opened and adjourned today by John Ellery, the coroner for Mid and North-West Shropshire.

He said the inquest would be adjourned “to await the outcome of police inquiries”.

Neil Stokes, 22, of Spring Gardens, Shrewsbury, and Daryl Brown, 32, of Severn Drive, Wellington, appeared before magistrates in Shrewsbury last week charged with the murder of Mr Griffiths.

Stokes and Brown, who were doormen at the nightclub on the night of disturbance, entered no pleas and were remanded in custody to appear at Shrewsbury Crown Court on July 13.

Two other men arrested as part of the inquiry have been released on police bail while the investigation continues into the death of Mr Griffiths.
