Field sees bright future with Bucks
Tuesday 7th July 2009, 11:28AM BST.
Midfielder Tom Field today revealed his desire to fire AFC Telford United to glory after a rollercoaster close-season that had started in the dole queue, writes CHRIS HUDSON.
Quantity surveyor Field rejected the chance to go full-time in the Blue Square Premier following his departure from Vauxhall Motors because he did not want to give up his ‘other’ career.
That looked a gamble when he was made redundant in the week following the end of last season.
But the 23-year-old, who is also studying for a degree at Liverpool John Moores University, quickly found new employment and then got his move to the Bucks.
“It’s brilliant for me and everything has fallen right into place,” said Field.
“I got made redundant from my old work and, with the recession, I didn’t think I’d get a job. Then, in the space of two weeks, I’ve got a new job that is better than my old one and Telford have come in for me.
“This is a great move for me because Telford is an unbelievable place to play football.
“At Vauxhall Motors I was probably the best player but there are lots of good players here and the fitness is much higher. They’re very professional and it will show on the pitch.”
Former Everton trainee Field will be competing with half a dozen other players for a place in the Telford engine room.
But he is confident in his ability and has been boosted by discussions with manager Rob Smith and assistant Larry Chambers.
“Rob and Larry have said to me that they wouldn’t have signed me if they didn’t think I was good enough to get in the team,” he said.
