Body is discovered in river
Saturday 4th July 2009, 10:17AM BST.
An area of Shrewsbury was sealed off today after a body was pulled from the River Severn.
The alarm was raised by a member of the public who made the discovery in the Castlefields area of the town shortly after 8am.
About 20 firefighters were called to the weir off Sydney Avenue.
The body, which is believed to be that of a man, was recovered from the river shortly before 9am.
Inspector Pete Gebbie, for West Mercia police, said: “We were called at 8.05am. It was a report of a body in the river.”
A length of the towpath from the weir towards Shrewsbury has been cordoned off by police.
The Castle Walk Bridge was also sealed off with police tape.
A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue said crews were called at about 8am.
“We’ve sent two pumps from Shrewsbury, the rescue tender from Wellington, the boat and rescue unit from Shrewsbury and the incident commander from Shrewsbury,” he said.
