Town exit was tough, says Davies

Ben Davies has described the decision to leave Shrewsbury as the “toughest of my career” – as the midfielder’s replacement arrived at the Prostar Stadium.
Davies’ three-year stint at the Prostar Stadium officially ended after he signed for Town’s League Two rivals Notts County.
That has prompted manager Paul Simpson to bring in 27-year-old Lewis Neal, who has had spells with Stoke, Preston and Carlisle, on a two-year-deal.
But Davies admitted to plenty of soul-searching over recent weeks before reaching a final decision.
“I have got married over the summer so with the wedding, the honeymoon and this on top, there has been a lot going on,” said Davies.
“For a number of reasons, I just feel this is the right time for me to move on. I have had the best three years of my career here so to move on was the toughest decision I’ve made.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with two fantastic managers in Paul Simpson and Gary Peters and you won’t meet a nicer chairman than Roland Wycherley.
“The fans have been brilliant and to walk away from them is tough. It’s a massive regret that we haven’t got promoted because that’s what I wanted to achieve when I came to the club.
“But I feel it’s time for a new challenge.”
Davies has refuted suggestions he has made a sidewards move by joining County, who have recently enjoyed a major cash injection following a summer takeover.
“I got the same sort of comments when I left Chester to join Shrewsbury and that was the best thing I have done football wise,” he added. “I have gone for football and personal reasons but I wouldn’t have joined any club which didn’t have ambition.
Meanwhile, Simpson is excited at the prospect at signing Neal, who made 73 appearances for Stoke and 82 for Preston.
“He is the type of player I want to bring in – he’s got good ability and is a good athlete,” said Simpson.
“He is an out-and-out left-sided player, which is something we haven’t really had, and a very determined character.”

Ben must have spent almost half of his time at the Town injured and was cared for and paid by the club. It does seem a lack of any loyalty to go for more money to a club in the same division and, in recent seasons, some distance behind the Town in terms of league position. But it also begs the question whether there has been a radical change in Town’s salary negotiations. Was Darren Moss really offered a contract in which his salary was reduced by 40%as reports suggest?

reports from the shropshire star say that he had intrest from championship and league 1 clubs. this is like gareth barry going to man city, clearly just for the money. he could of easily played at a higher level so why take a step backwards to notts county. clearly just for the money!!

He’s been off the pace since his injury midway through last season and won’t be missed. Notts County is nearer to where his mother in law is as well – serves him right !!!
STFC must not become dependent on one ‘star’ player – if thats what he thought he was.

while team loyalty is great , which person would not take a higher paying job if offere it there is always a lot of hypocrisy when it comes to us sports fans but deep down we all would probablly do the same.

Blatant money grabber, better off without him. Far too inconsistent last season anyway.

Good riddence to you Ben. Like Richard Hope, you should’ve signed for a bigger club.

As we all know Footballers have a very short span, and at this level they have to do what is right for their families. However, to come out with all this rubbish is very poor, if he had been honest and sais it is purley about the money then people would have respected him more. Since his hernia operation his standards have dropped nearly as quickly as he does in the box!! We all move on, but I for one, wont give him a good reception when he comes back !

This is nothing like Barry to Man City. Davies is a league 2 player so whilst i am sure he earns a decent wage he is hardly a millionaire like Barry is he? He probably has a family to support, we’d all do the same in his shoes, especially considering football is a short career.
Not that I care that much for STFC (in fact not at all), but that comment is just plain daft…
