Anger over parking charge error
Friday 3rd July 2009, 12:25PM BST.
New parking charge signs for a north Shropshire town today provoked an angry reaction from councillors because they say people will face charges on a Sunday.
But council officials today apologised after revealing the signs in Market Drayton should not have listed charges on a Sunday and blamed the error on a printing problem.
The problem was noticed by Market Drayton town councillor Nigel Woods last night and he told a meeting of the Market Drayton and Rural Areas Local Joint Committee he was “extremely annoyed”.
He said the town council had not been consulted over the changes.
But Shropshire Council officers today admitted the signs were a mistake and apologised.
Jennifer Fullard, council spokeswoman, said: “The changes to parking charges on Frogmore Car Park are a result of the new signs being printed incorrectly. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and would like to assure people that these errors will be remedied over the weekend.”
Town councillor Val Taylor said the misprinted sign “upset a lot of people” at last night’s town council meeting, and called for people who had wrongly paid to be reimbursed.
“All the councillors went out to look at it last night, they just put it up and it’s going to cost them. If it had been April Fool’s Day I’d have thought someone was having a go,” she said.
“Someone at the town council meeting noticed and told the councillors, so they all went marching out to look at it. We are all human and we can all make mistakes and that’s the way I look at it, but it shouldn’t be happening.”

Perhaps the Market Drayton Councillors should speak to the Newport Council. T&W tried imposing parking charges some time ago.
If it is one thing that Drayton can do without it is Car Park Charges!
It is like a ghost town now.
Some action is needed to attract customers to its shops, – who thought up this bright idea?

Council taxes to fund new labour and EU bonkers policies are an outrage
as if they dont take enough they have the cheek to charge us to park in our own car parks
this will kill the local economy
Only Conservatives will make it cheaper to drive with cuts to parking, fuel tax and more, we are the party of the motorist, clown brown is anti car, he must go now

Parking charges (certainly on a Sunday) – work very efficiently at sending people driving a little further on where there are none. Right/wrong isn’t what I’m talking but, the local shops suffer where there are charges.
