Town set to try one-way traffic plan

Church Stretton will be trying a new one-way system for three months starting at the beginning of August.

The plan is to turn a stretch of High Street, between the Bucks Head roundabout and HSBC bank, into a one-way street running from south to north.

Shropshire Council will put up signs in the town soon showing drivers which way to go.

The trial is being co-ordinated by Church Stretton Traffic Management Implementation Team, which includes members of the town council, Church Stretton Area Partnership and Shropshire Council.

Councillor Peter Relph, team chairman, said: “The idea is to make traffic flow better and to make it safer, in particular for older people with mobile transport and for parents with prams. If it works there’s a possibility it will be made permanent.”

Councillor Relph said the scheme was being considered because of narrow pavements in the area and as part of an attempt to get more communal use out of the market square.
