Sports star returning to roots
Thursday 2nd July 2009, 8:15AM BST.
A Shropshire sporting star will return to her roots this weekend to inspire the next generation of wheelchair and disabled athletes.
Debbie Brennan, who hails from Telford and was educated at the Lord Silkin School in Stirchley, will be at Ican2, a free family fun day organised by Telford & Wrekin Council’s disabled children’s team at the Telford International Centre on Saturday.
Debbie, who has cerebral palsy, won four medals, including a gold, at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 paralympics.
It had already been revealed that Tessa Sanderson, who won javelin gold in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, would be opening the event that has been organised by Telford & Wrekin Council’s disabled children’s team.
Debbie will return to Telford from Germany where she now lives with her soldier husband Blake Johnson, who is also from the town, and their young son.
Tessa and Debbie will be meeting, working with and inspiring children, young people and adults throughout the day.
Councillor Stephen Burrell, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “It promises to be a fun, exciting and informative day for everyone who attends.”
Families attending the day will be entered into a free prize draw to win tickets for Oakengates Theatre, the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Play Pit Pirate Adventure tickets and a 19 inch colour TV and DVD player.
