Field joins Bucks
Wednesday 1st July 2009, 12:21PM BST.
Midfielder Tom Field was today officially unveiled as AFC Telford United’s fourth summer signing – with boss Rob Smith fighting off interest from full-time clubs.
The 23-year-old midfielder, a former Everton trainee, agreed non-contract terms with the Blue Square North club at training last night.
Field had offers from clubs in the Blue Square Premier but the Bucks chief was delighted to bring him on board.
“He definitely had bigger offers elsewhere but he had his heart set on Telford,” Smith revealed.
“He’s got a lot of experience behind him for his age, and the world is his oyster now. He can take this opportunity and his football skills are there for all to see.
“You speak to managers around the league and he’s very highly-rated.
“I know for a fact there were two Conference clubs in for him, but he didn’t want to go full-time at the minute.”
Field has experience in the Blue Square North, having spent most of the last two years at Vauxhall Motors.
He was sent off at the New Bucks Head in the 2007-08 season in an infamous match that saw the Motormen finish with just seven men.
His arrival, following on from the capture of Stalybridge duo Steve Torpey and Rhys Meynell and Corby striker Matt Nolan, also signals the end of Smith’s summer wheeling and dealing.
“I’m up to budget and that’s just about it now,” he said. “As and when injuries and suspensions occur, we will have to look at it again.
“But I feel I’ve got more than enough cover in most positions and, when I look at the squad, I can’t honestly say there’s anyone else I’d like to go out and sign.”
- Telford are one of 20 Conference clubs to receive just under £10,000 from the FA as their share of the FA Cup pool as their reward for reaching the first round proper last season.
