Shropshire cycling round-up
Tuesday 30th June 2009, 9:04AM BST.
Several personal bests, a championship wrapped up, and a couple of mistakes leading to lost points – round 10 of the Friction and Hydraulic Services Shropshire Championship Points Series was full of incident.
Although Andy Bason took another fine win in the Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association 30 at Waters Upton it was a close call, with Dave Griffiths pushing the Shropshire champion hard.
Bason crossed the line in 1hr 4mins 20secs with Griffiths knocking over four minutes off his personal best to grab the runner-up spot just 56 seconds back.
There was a top ride too from Andy Tamplin, whose fitness shone through as he challenged Richard Watson for third, just missing out by eight seconds behind 1:09:05.
This great battle at the top of the leader board was always going to mean a close call in the Team Award, and so it proved, with Wrekinsport just beating Paramount by a narrow six seconds in 3:26:56, with Mark Griffiths doing enough to be third counter.
But it was double-dismay for the rider starting in second place in the series – Dan Soltys.
A quick dash home to pick up a forgotten skinsuit was to no avail as problems with a slipping seat post meant that he had to watch the race from the sidelines – with Tamplin gaining valuable ground as a result.
A warm evening saw riders hampered on the long leg north to Market Drayton by a north-easterly wind – but that didn’t stop a great show by Jim Gresty.
The North Shropshire Wheeler took first spot in the veterans competition with a great ride of +22:50 to move into the top 10 for the first time – with series leader Pete Griffin grasping the runner-up slot.
Griffin put in a great performance of +19:57 to see off a challenge from Gresty’s team mate Phil Guy –– but it was another disaster that changed the vets standings.
Wrekinsport’s Allen Jones misjudged the finish line – despite having previously ridden the course – and stopped after 25 miles, only realising his mistake when other riders started overtaking him.
By this time it was too late and Pete Ding moved up into second place after taking fourth spot on the day with +17:40, leaving Jones rueing not examining the start sheet instructions.
The first medal of the series was decided when Daniel Lamsdell put himself into an unbeatable position when he crossed the line in 1:31:04.
Lamsdell gained the earliest gold medal ever in this series thanks to a determined effort to try his hand at a range of challenges.
It was a strong win by Claire Cook in her first attempt at the distance as she extended her lead in the Ladies Series.
Cook put in a fine effort to cross the line in 1:18:15 – 18th spot overall – to set a benchmark best, with Jenny York taking the runner-up spot in 1:22:14.
Andy Clarke made it a perfect end to a month’s return from Indonesia as he took back the Category B Award after finishing in 1:14:38.
And it was first-timer Dave Moore who gained Category C honours after stopping the watch in 1:17:56.
