Rock & Roll’s demi-god, Lenny Kravitz brought his “Love Revolution” tour to the West-Midlands on Saturday night with an epic set of funky-rock songs spanning his 16-year career.

The legendary rocker thrilled fans of all ages with songs including Let Love Rule, Fly Away and It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over.

Kravitz has a reputation for being a rock’n'roll behemoth and many fans were expecting to be rocked around the cavernous Civic Hall by plenty of power chords and riffs. However, the veteran star showed his versatility and pleased the 2,000 fans by mixing his trademark rock with a set of laid back funky-soul during his two-hour set.

There were many moments of sheer brilliance and musical genius from Kravitz throughout the night, but none more so than when teaming up with unbelievable guitarist Craig Ross, to produce a mind blowing 15-minute version of I’ll Be Waiting, which came complete with a stunning five-minute guitar solo from Ross. For a moment, if you closed your eyes, you could have been watching the flawless Slash during his Guns N’ Roses peak in the 1990s.

In a week when music dominated the world’s headlines with the passing of Michael Jackson, Lenny didn’t miss the opportunity to send his own message to one of his musical heroes by playing impromptu acoustic versions of Billie Jean and Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ that sparked the crowd into full song. Kravitz went on to remember the king of pop by emotionally saying “Michael Jackson rest in peace, I love you”, which added real emotion to the evening.

A bizarre moment from the night was when the house lights came up and Kravitz decided to undertake a 10 minute photo-shoot of the fans for his twitter page, something the front half of the crowd enjoyed, but not so sure about those at the back.

But by the end of the evening, fans were enthralled by the man then call Mr K. Lenny performed a storming set that made it easy to see why he is held in such high regard by his army of fans who crave the way he marries the sounds of the 1960’s rock Hendrix era with today’s pop rock culture.
