All change for Shrews

shrewsnewlogotm5As Town added a further signing to their squad last week, more doubt was cast over two of their current players, reports Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

Town brought in 29-year-old defender Dean Holden on a two-year deal from Falkirk. I can’t say I know a lot about the player, but he has experience at playing in England’s lower leagues for Oldham and Peterborough and can play anywhere along the back four.

My only concern is that he broke his leg playing for Falkirk in January last year and there has to be a question mark over his fitness.

As Holden was brought in, Darren Moss looks set to leave the club after rejecting a new deal. I was very sad to hear this news as Moss was one of our best and most consistent players last year after getting himself fit.

Apparently he was offered less money which is why he turned down the deal. This seems very bizarre as he is still at the peak of his game and has plenty left to offer the team. With Herd being released, there is a lot of pressure on Holden to fit straight in the first team and make the right back position his own.

The future of Ben Davies is still not clear, although it looks increasingly likely he will not be wearing blue and amber next season after he remains still undecided on his future. He seems to be waiting for the best team with the most money to sign him, so if I was Simpson I should start planning without him.

The best news of the week was hearing that Kelvin Langmead had committed his future to the club along with Omer Riza. Langmead has been one of our best players over the last two years and his putting pen to paper is like signing a new star player.

There was no surprise in hearing of Marc Pugh’s departure by mutual consent last week. I was a big fan of his, especially when he first joined the club, and I thought he had a lot of potential for someone so young. What I liked about him was that he was an old fashioned winger who loved to dribble past people. However, one of his biggest drawbacks was that he tended to drift out of games and didn’t seem interested, which ultimately cost his place in the team.

A new goalkeeper still remains a priority for Town, although Simpson has hinted he has got an experienced and youthful goalkeeper lined up. The sooner Simpson assembles the squad for the forthcoming season the better. It is currently undergoing some major changes and can take time for players to get used to each other.

The blogger appears to have good sources of information which fill in the background behind the reasons for decisions taken by players and management.
I wonder if he is able to research an issue that caused some controversy only a year ago when, despite Joe Hart being selected to play for England, it did not trigger off the contract payment. If Joe were to be selected to play for England in a competitive match during his period on loan to Birmingham (which is well within the bounds of possibility) would this initiate the contract payment? I am sure most fans would be interested if the blogger’s sources can provide an answer.
