Wait to hear on aqueduct status

Saturday 27th June 2009, 11:25AM BST.

Campaigners for Pontcysyllte aqueduct and canal’s bid for world heritage status were today waiting to hear whether they had been successful.

The team has been in Seville to address a meeting of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (Unesco) world heritage committee.

The committee will decide whether the world famous aqueduct should be one of 27 nominations hoping to be granted world heritage status. A decision is due today or tomorrow.

The aqueduct, near Llangollen, is regarded as one of Thomas Telford’s greatest civil engineering achievements.

The world heritage status would encompass the stretch of canal from Chirk Bank near Oswestry over the Chirk and Pontcysyllte aqueducts to Llangollen.

Bosses from Wrexham Council have been in the Spanish capital for the last few days to press their case.

The aqueduct, built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop between 1795 and 1805, is the longest and highest in Britain.

Dr Dawn Roberts, economic development manager for Wrexham Council, described it as an outstanding example of engineering.

Pontcysyllte aqueduct is Britain’s only nomination for the status.
