The world was in shock today after the death of King of Pop Michael Jackson following a suspected heart attack at his home in Los Angeles.

Tributes from the world of music, film and celebrity have flooded in as the pop star’s fans posted messages on websites to express their grief.

Paramedics were called to the 50-year-old singer’s Holmby Hills home yesterday and he was taken to the UCLA medical centre but was pronounced dead at 2.26pm – 10.26pm BST. His brother, Jermaine Jackson, said: “We believe he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home, however the cause of his death is unknown until the results of the autopsy are known.

“The personal physician who was with him at the time attempted to resuscitate him.”

The self-styled King of Pop was due to perform 50 farewell concerts in London this summer, bowing out on an illustrious music career spanning several decades while aiming to restore his fortunes.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “When he arrived at hospital at approximately 1.14pm a team of doctors including emergency physicians and cardiologists attempted to resuscitate him for a period of more than one hour, they were unsuccessful.”

TV footage showed a rescue helicopter flying the star’s body to a waiting ambulance.

A post-mortem examination was expected to take place later today, Los Angeles Coroner’s Office spokesman Fred Corral said.

Among the first to express their grief was Jackson’s first wife, Lisa Marie Presley, who said: “This is such a massive loss on so many levels, words fail me.”

Sir Paul McCartney, who collaborated on tracks with Jackson in the 1980s, said: “It’s so sad and shocking. I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy-man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever and my memories of our time together will be happy ones.”

Jackson leaves three children, Michael Joseph Jackson Junior, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince “Blanket” Michael Jackson II.

Jackson, who spent time living outside the US since his 2005 acquittal on child molestation charges, last toured 12 years ago. Fans today were waiting to hear whether they will receive refunds for his 50-concert residency at London’s O2 venue.

During his career the singer sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide, with Thriller becoming the biggest selling album of all time.

As a former music mogul myself, albeit in another incarnation, I’d like to add my thanks to Michael Jackson for his incredible legacy of work. He will be sadly missed. Rest In Peace, Michael.

stop and think about it before posting gushing dramatic drivel, Jackson may have been a so called super star but what has he done in the last 20 years, nothing !! he will be remebered not for his music but for his eccentric and questionable lifestyle. i like most sensible people wont miss him and will remeber him for what he was exposed as being.

The blanket coverage on TV – all channels, of the death of this man is totally over the top and a sad reflection on the values of our society.
Who was he, what was he. I personally am not in the least interested.

KH, he may have been accused of something, but at the end of the day he was cleared in a court of law. He was a little weird I’ll admit but the music he made although not recently was classic and timeless, no one will ever compare to MJ.

James, i take your point about his early music, but the same could be said for Paul Gadd , the difference less money for lawyers. There are far better human beings and far better musicians than MJ who dont get half the recognition

Is it too late to say that it would be nice if people could avoid writing ill of the dead in order to show some respect ? Ahh, it is.
Whether you liked his music or not, I think few could argue that despite his career being damaged with accusations that tarred him without ever being proven, he was a top quality song/dance act and he sustained his position as number one in the field for decades. This is an achievement few if any of us will manage. Sad to say, he may also be remembered as the ’80′s equivalent of Fatty Arbuckle, but for today at least, let’s remember him as someone who tried to entertain – and largely succeeded.

I thought he settled out of court by paying the family 13 million dollars?

I’ve heard many defences of Michael Jackson over the years from people who on the same evidence would have been parading outside his home with miss-spelt signs saying “Burn the Peedoh” – if he’d been say a local pensioner rather than someone who’d made a fortune by recording the CDs on their shelves.

How could anyone be so stupid {or cruel} as to think that he was capable of performing 50 consequetive concerts? Incredible! A 22 year old couldn’t do it. And how the hell were ‘drugs’ going to get him in physical shape anyway. Utter nonsense. Lets not forget greedy promotor sharks are complicit in this sad story too along with all the others.

He did make some very good music in the 80′s (so did lots of other artists)but nothing since, merc, the only stupid one was michael himself he was a 50 yr old man who should have been capable of making decisions on whether he could do the 50 gigs himself, but then he obviously lost the plot years ago so I think his death (suicide, maybe not officially but what he’s done to himself recently I think it amounts to suicide)was inevitable.
